Synchronized Energy Management Program

Power sector in India is growing at a very fast pace due to huge demand supply gap. In fact this is the fastest growing sector in Indian Industry today. Coal being the cheapest fuel and compared to other units, erection of thermal units being faster and cheaper, naturally maximum growth is in Coal based Thermal Power Plants.

However, thermal units being the major contributor to the emission of CO2, the green house gas, it is highly dangerous for the environment as well. Thus it is a major concern especially when majority of the units are concentrating more on units generated than on unit heat rate. More over, the shortage of power will continue to be there for another 8 or more years. This would make the situation vulnerable as all the IPPS (Independent Power Producers) would get better rates and profitability would be more, making producers least bothered about heat rate or unit efficiency.

On other front, although Bureau of Energy Efficiency trying very hard to propagate energy efficiency in all the sectors, including power sector, it hasn’t reached up to the small power stations (like CPP’s) in its true sense. The chances of improving energy efficiency faster are further slowed down as there are no mandatory norms in thermal power units like EURO I, EURO II etc.

Thus, it is the need of the hour to have such platform which shall bring the small power producers, the service providers, intellectuals and the bigger players in the industry to get united and under stand energy efficiency in its true sense. This platform will also provide solutions to other severe problems related to plant operation, maintenance or new technology.

Moreover it is very important to understand that improvement in plant performance and efficiency could contribute to this cause in a major way. For this it is the responsibility of all technical/ non technical personnel’s involved in Plant Operation and Management to have a similar approach of improving HR, limiting SPM, improving plant performance etc.

Sadly, there is no common platform for power plant professionals wherein they can share their experiences, problems and solutions with others; such that there is distribution of knowledge which could provide answers to commonly faced problems and their solutions.

To make some beginning in this direction, we, the like minded people at PGES have taken an initiative of providing a common platform to all professional’s who are directly or indirectly associated with Thermal Power Plants. To begin with, PGES will launch a platform in the form of a website to cater this need of industry, wherein professionals of Thermal Power Plants from various Companies/ Organizations/ Service Providers/ Consultants will be invited to join in and share their suggestions and experiences to others such that it improves over all knowledge of members inline to better efficiency and performance of the plant, thus contributing directly and indirectly to preserve our green planet.

The design of the website would be completed within one month. The first activity in the initial phase would be to discuss the problems and solutions of the industry on the website to form a ready made data base for the new entrants. Then at some suitable time the forum will be undertaking seminars, workshops and conferences at different venues in India so as to make the sector aware of new developments, technologies, methodology, SOP’s etc. The platform shall be floated with a title of ‘SYNERGEM for TPS’ - Synchronized Energy Management Program for Thermal Power Stations.
